Grounding Strategies for AI Communication

This corpus-based study analyzed Ubuntu technical support conversations (2004–2019) to identify successful vs. failed grounding strategies.
Findings:
Successful cases: frequent clarifications, confirmations, and adaptive repair moves.
Failures: insufficient clarification, lack of context adjustments, and poor timing.
The study provides a roadmap for building AI that proactively clarifies, repairs, and adapts in real time—critical for high-stakes domains like publishing and customer support.
