The Emerging Role of Human–AI Conversations

This graduate research analyzed a 20-minute speech-to-speech AI conversation using discourse frameworks from Davies & Harré (1999) and DuBois (2007). The study revealed that AI alternates between authoritative, facilitative, and participatory roles, but struggles with response delays and multi-speaker turn-taking. These findings highlight how AI both supports and disrupts dialogue, providing strategies for designing more flexible, adaptive conversation systems.
